San Filippo

San Filippo makes an impressive statement in 2010. The Brunello Le Lucére is one of the protagonists of the vintage and is a wine that captures a rare side of the Sangiovese grape. It is explosive, powerful and rich. Like the other great wines of the vintage, this Brunello proves the potential of everyone's favorite Tuscan red grape. MONICA LARNER

Roberto Gianelli, owner of the Brunello di Montalcino estate San Filippo, bought this property a few years ago and quickly began making stylish and elegant Brunello's. He has fallen in love with this small, deluxe quality estate with about 2 acres of vineyards in the Brunello appellation. His Le Lucere, a single-vineyard Brunello, shows a unique, almost Burgundian richness and texture. Le Lucere also comes in a Riserva in the top years. JAMES SUCKLING

Watching the evolution of San Filippo's wines over the last few years has been fascinating. In part it is because owner, Roberto Gianelli, is a great person and his enthusiasm and love of the wines from his adopted home (he's from Florence) is contagious but also it is because the wines are now - more and more - bearing the mark of his personal philiosphy and preferences rather than that of his original consultant oenologist. Tasting through the several vintage a recently they clearly hold more freshness, more typicity and an altogether more interesting personality than the very first wines made here. Gianelli has changed fermentation times, changed oak regime (now incresingly botte and older tonneaux) and increasingly played around the edges to make his wines more about fruit freshness and site identity than lumbering caricature. The most recent vintages bear testamanet to these changes but coming vintages will reinforce the new style and in turn the superb quality. PWS

San Filippo Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucere 2013 1500ml
Subtle and complete aromas of cherry, flowers, and orange peel. Full body, round and velvety tannins. So pretty and refined. Polished. A gorgeous wine. Drink or hold. (96) JAMES SUCKLING

Bright red. Perfumed aromas and flavors of pink flowers, sour red cherry and strawberry. Fresh and juicy but also dense and deep, this boasts captivating sugar-acid-tannin balance. Finishes long and perfumed; despite its sneaky concentration and size, it also has a light-on-its-feet quality that is very typical of this wine. IAN D'AGATA, Vinous

San Filippo Brunello di Montalcino 2016
A member of our PWS Sydney team, Pat has chosen this for his Staff Pick 2021, here's why:

When I think of Christmas in Sydney, my mind goes to days spent at the beach. Sun soaked and full of Coles salads, cold meats and Riesling. However this year, the way the weather is shaping up, it's starting to look like snow on the beach could be a likely outcome. That’s why something richer, more voluptuous and hedonistic is called for. The 2016 San Filippo Brunello di Montalcino is a classic wine from a classic region. Brunello has long been a favourite wine at royal dinner tables and its easy to see why.  With smoked cedar, mahogany and teak followed by dark fruit, pressed blackberry and plum, its perfect for a rainy Christmas inside. I know what I will be pouring this year for the family. Go on, you deserve it! PAT, PWS

The San Filippo 2016 Brunello di Montalcino offers a slightly exotic personality with smoked cedar, mahogany or teak followed by dark fruit, pressed blackberry and plum. The wine ages in large oak cask for two years. This is a robustly textured and muscular Brunello with full-bodied intensity that transcends both the bouquet and the mouthfeel. There's a lot going on, especially in terms of the wine's smokiness and spiciness, and there is good acidity and tannic structure to frame it all. Production is 15,000 bottles. 3. San Filippo Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucere 2016
San Filippo Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucere 2016

This special selection of fruit from San Filippo is characterized by more intensity and concentration compared to the estate's classic Brunello. In this vintage, I also discovered a greater level of Sangiovese purity and direction, thanks to tight berry tones, dusty mineral, spice and balsam herb. To the palate, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino le Lucére delivers succulent fruit and even a touch of sweetness, all powered by tannins, clearly driven by both the oak and the fruit itself. This wine ages in a combination of barrique, tonneau and botte grande for two years. This 14,000-bottle release will hit the market in January 2021. MONICA LARNER, eRobertParker.com

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucere takes things to a darker and more earthy place. Flowery undergrowth, wet stone and tobacco lift from the glass, taking on fresher notes of raspberry and sage over time. There’s a gorgeous interplay of velvety textures, salty minerals and lifting acidity in the mouth, as well as fine tannins which blend to create a classically balanced impression. Red fruits linger along with hints of licorice and minty herbs, while the structure of the 2016 Le Lucere takes a back seat through the finale. This is a very well constructed effort that should excel over the medium term. ERIC GUIDO, Vinous
