Wittmann

RHEINHESSEN

Philipp Wittmann has become a legend in his own lifetime. His Rieslings have an alluring saltiness that draws you in, as well as purity and an inherent coolness. He is amongst Germany's best. ANNE KREBIEHL MW The Wines of German

Even the simple estate-bottled riesling is serious wine at a bargain price. Moreover, the three finest dry rieslings are among the best produced in all of Germany. JOEL B PAYNE

Trying to explain Wittmann’s wines can pose a bit of a problem as the descriptions I tend to use may seem a little at odds with each other. They tend to have a richness and density to them, the fruit can run in to the ripe, yellow, stone fruits and melon characters. There is a fine leesy element to them at times. They can seem almost generous and muscular. With that being said the wines are also piercingly intense with a huge impact, rocky minerality and an underlying tension that belies the bold (in the context of Riesling) framework of the wines.

The overall sense I get from his wines is something like a coiled spring. The fruit and acidity, along with extract, can come together giving you a feeling that the elements are in harmony and everything with his wines are in perfect place but they are all bundled up and just require the time to uncoil from their tensed up state.

The short version is that I regard these wines as being among the absolute greats, top four or five, in Germany but they require patience. As Alex just said when I was writing this “they are Rheinhessen Royalty” ROSCOE
