The name of John Hughes' winery leaves no doubt about his long-term ambition: to explore every avenue of riesling, whether bone-dry or sweet, coming from regions across the wine world, albeit with a strong focus on Australia. The wines made from his Clare Valley vineyard offer dry (No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 10), off-dry (No. 5 and No. 8), sparkling (No. 9) and fortified (No. 7) styles.

Ever since we tried his first releases you know John's wines were something special. Each vintage they are beautiful expressions of their origin and of the season. HE masterfully captures all that in a bottle.
He is a humble and passionate man and we are always stoked when he comes to visit and not just because he brings great Aussie Riesling. PWS

It's taken time, but I've finally become used to John Hughes' brand name and label system. Here the Meyer lemon/lemongrass flavours of the Eden Valley are correct, even if they have hints of Hunter Valley semillon, a dreadful accusation for a SA riesling maker. While each of the three dry Rieslingfreak wines in this line up has its own character, they are difficult to split on points. JAMES HALLIDAY
