Once an offspring of Werribee Park and its grand mansion, Shadowfax is now very much its own master. It has 10ha of mature vineyards at Werribee; plus 5ha of close-planted pinot noir, 5ha of chardonnay and 2ha of pinot gris at the Little Hampton Vineyard in Macedon; and 3ha of pinot noir, 2ha of chardonnay and 1ha of gewurztraminer elsewhere in Macedon. Alister Timms, with degrees in science (University of Melbourne) and oenology (University of Adelaide) became chief winemaker in '17 (replacing long-serving winemaker Matt Harrop). JAMES HALLIDAY

The wines at Shadowfax just keep getting better. The vines are maturing and the team have a great understanding of the property as time goes on. Subtle changes in winemaking and a couple of solid vintages has seen a run of cracking wines from this producer. Macedon's star is shining bright! PWS

Dark cherry, baking spice, toasted hazelnut, a flicker of mint and rose. It’s mid-weight, flavoursome, a subtle cranberry juiciness, lovely shale-y sort of tannin, maybe boysenberry, quiet succulence, and a fine long finish. You’re having it large here, at a very fair price. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front
