October Mixed Dozen 2020 - Spring Drinking

October Mixed Dozen 2020 - Spring Drinking Spring has sprung and in its usual style it is throwing a bit of everything at us weather-wise. So, we have put together a pack of great wines that will pair with whatever you are doing and wherever you happen to be during these strange times. They are all delicious and are perfect for some pre-season drinking with a little warmer weather on the horizon.

Spring has sprung and in its usual style it is throwing a bit of everything at us weather-wise. So, we have put together a pack of great wines that will pair with whatever you are doing and wherever you happen to be during these strange times. They are all delicious and are perfect for some pre-season drinking with a little warmer weather on the horizon.

We have tried to keep the brief pretty simple here - It's gotta be delicious and its gotta be great value. We have thrown in some really cool wines that we think are going to surprise you as well as a little bit of a curve-ball...

So, that curve-ball. First, this month's dozen only has 11 bottles. Well, technically it only has 10. Got your interest? We have, for the first time, included a 2lt cask wine. Wait! This is not just any old plonk this a fantastic drop from Portuguese producer Lavradores de Freitoria.

This wine is a blend of Malvasia Fina, Gouveio, and Síria and when we tried this we were instantly hooked. Textural and bright, packed full of crunchy fruit, crystalline and clear. It's vibrant and fresh but has plenty of interest. Best of all its in cask so this will stay fresh as a daisy in your fridge for up to a month… if you can keep it that long. We are totally convinced and glad to see more high-quality wine coming this way.

The Poggio Anima Grillo may be our pick for best value wine of the year. In fact, the whole range from Poggio Anima is so good for the money. This little Grillo from Sicily is gonna hit the spot on the next warm, sunny day with its lemony, pithy fruits and punchy flavours. The labels are great and the juice is even better.

What Spring pack would be a Spring pack without a rose and one of the best and a classic Provencal drop from Domaine Fouques. This one of the very few bio-dynamic Rose from the region and presents in a serious but seriously drinkable style. Not sure what more you could ask from a rose and this is something we keep in the store year round.

A little further west and we have another awesome drop from Young Gun's of Wine runner-up and all-round legend Michael Downer. Another local producer who can seem to do no wrong this soft and supple, spicy Syrah. This is the perfect foil to a cool Spring evening, mid-weight in style with finely etched tannins that showcase the cool-climate Adelaide Hills fruit.

The Erste + Neue Kalteresee Schiava 2019 is such a tasty surprise. While the Alto-Adige in Italy's north-west is better know of its whites it makes some spectacular, lighter reds that are just prefect for the Spring drinking. It's got a wonderful lifted nose while the palate has a beautiful core of red fruits that are chewy and crisp. It's the epitome of warm weather red, we just love this wine.

The Scout Wines are by mastermind Sarah Adamson and Greg Lane and yes, this is named after the one-and-only Scout Finch of To Kill a Mockingbird. Sarah and Greg seek out the best-of-the-best for this awesome little kiwi project. This is a blend of Southern Valley's Pinot in a wonderfully charming and charismatic framwork that encompasses all that is great about NZ Pinot. A delicate hand and a light touch has produced this scrumptious little drop.

There is plenty more in this great little pack of drinking including the ridiculous value and super crunchy Fonataleoni Chianti, the soft, plush & Spicy Les Sentiers Vaucluse Rouge, one of my favourites with the De Bortoli Same Same red blend as well as one of Australia's best examples in the Sutton Grange Sangiovese and the long and lush Billancia Pinot Gris.

We hope you enjoy drinking it as much as we enjoyed putting it together.
