As I see happening in many places with quality producers, Fedellos do Couto has finally left the Ribeira Sacra appellation of origin. They will release their wines without the appellation of origin, and the wines will be certified by an external entity so that they will have more freedom about the work in their vineyards and winery. Many feel the appellations benefit nothing other than standardization of wines and volume rather than quality, and the best producers have recurring problems with this as their wines get rejected because they are not like the others. Shameful. Their 2016s are their first wines that do not carry the appellation's seal. At the same time, they are probably the finest set of wines they have released to date...
