The 2016 Viñas Viejas En Pie Franco Malbec was produced with grapes from old, ungrafted Malbec vineyards in Las Compuertas (50%) and Vistalba (30%) in Luján de Cuyo, complemented by 20% grapes from Altamira in the Valle de Uco. It shows the old-vine character of Malbec in the province of Mendoza. The destemmed grapes fermented in concrete pools with natural yeasts, and the wine matured in used French barriques for one year. This aims to be a traditional Malbec with elegance, complexity and freshness. This was previously called Vineyard Selection, which Riccitelli thought didn't mean anything, so they changed it to exactly what it is—old ungrafted Malbec. It's difficult to describe the nuances that make all these Malbecs different, as they share a common profile combining elegance and power, with very good freshness and unnoticeable oak. But there is more depth and complexity as we go up the equality (and price) ladder. LUIS GUTIERREZ
