With over 300 native varietals the wines of Greece have always been a curiosity to me. Long gone are the days of Retsina with a bold resurgence in Greek winemaking focusing of unique terroirs and varieties. The wines by Apostolos Thymiopoulos are no exception. With an emphasis on the unique lime-rich marlstone, schist and granite soils of Naoussa, biodynamic viticulture and a lack of fining or filtration, his wines are the purest expression of place. ATMA is a blend of the little known Mandilaria as wells as Xinomavro (from the words xino (sour) and mavro (black)) which is often heralded as the Nebbiolo of Greece. The wine is bursting with red berry and cherry on the nose with a subtle nutmeg spice. Those firm Nebbiolo-like tannins provide a sturdy backbone to the palate which shows savoury dark cherry and blood plum with a lifted acid line to tie it all together. And the best thing about this wine and why ive chosen this as my staff pick this year is that at this price it wont break the bank to try something new and different! BILLY
