Legend holds that the Abel clone first travelled from one of the best vineyards of Burgundy by way of a gumboot. Making its way to New Zealand in 1975, the ‘Gumboot Smuggler’ was caught by a NZ Customs’ officer, Malcolm Abel, who incidentally was the first to plant the mythical cutting on his vineyard. Our Abel Pinot Noir was handpicked from SA’s first plantings of the clone. Wild yeast and small batch ferment, followed by maturation in French. SIDEWOOD
