Anselmo Mendes grandfather grew grapes, and Mendes studied agronomy at University before completing a Masters in Oenology, followed by a short but intensive period of work experience in Bordeaux. He started his own label in 1998, making wines from 25 small parcels. He makes several whites and some reds which are all fantastic. The Vinhos Verde is Loureiro with about a 30% addition of Alvarinyho (Spains Alabrino). Granny smith, pear and stone fruit with a light talcy, citrus note to the fore. The palate has some really nice grip and weight with pure white fruits and just a hint of tropical goodness spliced into the palate. These always have a lovely acid backbone that prop up the fuller palates wonderfully. Big fan! PWS
