Bests Bin 1 Shiraz 2018

Best’s is one of Australia’s most historic wineries, with just two families behind the operation since 1866. Based in the Grampians region of Victoria, the wines are consistently elegant and delicious, and for the world-class quality they provide, they’re exceptionally well-priced – they’re more than deserving of consideration as some of Australia’s best value. Best’s is also a former Wine of the Year recipient for its icon Thomson Family Shiraz, which is only released in great vintages. JAMES HALLIDAY

I am going to start this email with a statement. You couldn’t reasonably expect any more from a wine at anywhere near this price point! With that being said I guess it fits in with the James Halliday’s Wine Companion Award for Best Value Winery of the Year this year.

We sent out another Best’s offer recently for a wine that was $165 a bottle, and worth every penny. To be able to produce a wine of this calibre at this price point is a serious achievement and I would argue that this is even more impressive than a number of their high end offerings (which I believe to be some of the greatest expressions of Shiraz in Australia) because it is so good AND so cheap.

For $21.50 you are buying a wine of unquestioned pedigree. You get a wine that delivers sumptuously juicy and immediately impressive fruit that can be drunk right out of the gate and, indeed, that is precisely what I did. You also get a wine that delivers class and sophistication with the inherent stuffing and filigreed tannins to carry it in the cellar for a period as it grows in stature and detail. A wine that delivers an expression of Shiraz that is completely unique to that region. You get all of that for $21.50.

As of early September 2020, when I tasted this, this is my value wine of the year. Remarkable job and thank you team Best’s.
