Burgundy 2018 Wrap Up Round One

ON 2018 REDS
Generally, the 2018s in barrel tend toward vivid and bright red and blue fruit aromatics. They seem to leap out of the glass with a sense of nascent joie-de-vivre.
In terms of fruit profile, as with the aromatics, I find more red fruit than black, something that I personally prefer because red fruit is associated with that ambiguous descriptor pinoté. I use it myself, and when I do, it just seems the most obvious but perfect word for a wine that sings of pure, unadulterated Pinot Noir. If it doesn’t, then we have a problem. NEAL MARTIN

2018 Summary – A Decidedly Ripe yet Surprisingly Good White Burgundy Vintage:
Mother Nature and the magical terroirs of Burgundy sometime cooperate in the most mysterious ways to produce genuinely remarkable results. 2018 would be one of those sometimes because no one, or at least no one that I spoke to, expected the whites to be anywhere near as good as they are. While it is true that some 2018s are in fact unduly ripe, heavy and lacking in vibrancy, or even dilute, most are fresh, vibrant, delicious and reflective of their individual terroirs. Indeed, I would go so far as to say that 2018 is one of the most surprising white Burgundy vintages in quite some time. BURGHOUND

This is our first, much delayed, 2018 Burgundy Wrap Up Offer. In normal years we would have compiled a number of these now, and I intend to have a couple of more before 2020 is done. As is my tradition I like to begin the first of these offers with some general comments and thoughts on the vintage to set the tone a little.

This year the first instalment of our larger rounds of Burgundy offers includes a number of producers that were offered previously but that may have been overlooked by some in the upheaval and uncertainty of the situation we find ourselves in. That is something of a shame as Producers like Domaine de Bellene and Jane Eyre have arguably made the finest wines of their careers this year.

There were also some wines that would normally be taken up by restaurants that didn’t require them this year and so we have a little Gerard Raphet, Hudelot Noellat and Henri Boillot Available.

On top of these usual rock solid stars, that you would likely be familiar with us offering, perhaps the most exciting thing that we acquired this year are the wines of legendary estate Domaine Groffier. The story of Groffier is long and in many circles he is regarded in the very top echelon of producers.

Their fanatical attention to detail in the vineyard is oft referenced as being borderline crazy. The wines have grown more pure and inviting in recent years with some tweaks in the winery. Today they are better than they have ever been and that is a very big call. Combine this with some of the greatest holdings in the region and the wines, now under the stewardship of Nicolas Groffier, these are unmissable and the line up is astonishing.

In some cases there is good quantities of things available but with many wines it is a handful of bottles only. With those wines where we have volume we have added our usual extra discount on dozens but all wines are the original minimum 20% off pre arrival pricing.

There is so much great Burgundy here. If you missed any of these at the time they were released now is your opportunity to pick them up at the original ex ship pricing.
