Carmes de Rieussec 2015 375ml Offer / France
Carmes de Rieussec would have to be one of the world’s top value sweet wines. Seriously. I don’t just mean in the context of Sauternes either. Across all styles globally I can’t think of many dessert wines that consistently deliver such quality, year in and year out, and for this kind of price point. There are a lot of Sauternes houses whose top bottlings aren’t much, if any, better and are a lot more expensive, enough so that they should take a good long look at what is going on here at Rieussec.
The estate was acquired Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) in 1984 and, as you would expect, nothing was spared to bring Rieussec up to the very pinnacle of quality, which is where it has sat since its legendary 2001 was released. The quality of both bottlings is astonishing but the fact the Carmes can deliver so much for this price is truly remarkable and a testament to the focus of one of the world’s great wine dynasties to produce wines of only the standards achievable.
I think at $29 each in a six pack this would be one of the best value offers we have sent this year. In my mind this is something you buy dozens of. They will drink well now and, as both critics below mention, they will continue to improve for a decade or more. What more could you as for in a wine?
