Daniel Bouland 2019

This estate is one of my personal reference points for the Beaujolais. Concentrated and succulent, Bouland’s wines are beautifully differentiated by site and age gracefully. At this address, 2019 has turned out beautifully: generous and elegantly fleshy but also finer-boned than the exuberantly fruit-driven 2018s. With 2017, 2018 and now 2019, Bouland has produced a trio of fine vintages, and I suspect that determining a preference between them will be easier in a decade than it is today. WILLIAM KELLEY, The Wine Advocate

Bouland has a rabid following in France and overseas so his wines are never easy to track down.” JOSH REYNOLDS, Vinous

The 2019 Beaujolais wines are brighter and more delicate than the richer, more muscular 2018s or 2017s. Perfumed and floral, the best examples display all the succulent charm and elegance that Beaujolais purists prize. WILLIAM KELLEY, The Wine Advocate

Bouland’s Cru Beaujolais have long set a benchmark for high quality, expressive gamay that speaks eloquently of its site. A renowned recluse he toils largely alone working his old gnarled vines, hand harvesting, whole bunch fermenting the must with nothing but wild yeasts in open top fermenters and then settling them into old oak. The results? Deep, powerful and beguiling wines that transport you to the various Lieux-Dits he knows like the back of his hand. These are wines that are as compelling as they are authentic and while they are perhaps lesser know than those of Morgon’s Foillard and Lapierre, in my mind they sit comfortably at the same table.

2019 continues a run of strong vintages in Beaujolais and while yields were significantly down on 2018, the wines are of an equal high quality showing a fresher more fine-boned structure with expressive floral aromatics. These are the type of Beaujolais that truly thrill me and while comparisons often label Cru Beaujolais as an affordable alternative to red Burgundy, I would argue that these are wines that deserve the attention without an external reference point. For those who seek wines that harmonise purity of fruit, acid, texture and aromatics all through the lens of their idiosyncratic sites, then these are wines that will excite and bring great pleasure. Add to that their incredibly modest price tags and you have a pretty compelling case for adding these to your cellar.
