Duemani Cifra 2018
Duemani Cifra – One of the greatest value for quality wines in Italy – $60 25% off
Proprietors Luca D’Attoma and Elena Celli appear to be unstoppable forces here. Over the last few years, D’Attoma and Celli have begun to work more with cement and have introduced whole clusters, both of which seem to give the wines more layers of expression. The Duemani wines stand out for their extraordinary purity. What else is left to say? ANTONIO GALLONI
Fiercely independent and a man of mesmerizing intensity, Luca D’Attoma is one of the best winemakers in Italy. MONICA LARNER, The Wine Advocate
This is another strong set of wines from Luca D’Attoma and Elena Celli at Duemani. Syrah and Cabernet Franc take center stage in rich, expressive wines that show the potential of the Tuscan coast. ANTONIO GALLONI, 2020
Cifra. I miss this wine whenever it sells out. It sits up there in my top handful of favourite Italian wines to drink with a good meal.
Gone are the days when we used to have to try and convince people that buying Cabernet Franc from the Tuscan Coast was a good idea. These days the wines of legendary Italian winemaker Luca D’Attoma are well loved here in Oz and, in particular Cifra, which now sells out in a couple of months each release and we have to wait for the next. Quite frustrating really. I mean, why can’t these people just make more wine?
For those who are not familiar with the story, a very brief recap. Luca was responsible for many of the most famous wines in Tuscany. He was the consultant to a number of the great estates of the region and is widely regarded as one of the country’s greatest talents.
While helping to shape the future of the Super Tuscan movement, Luca fell in love with Cabernet Franc in the region. He became increasingly adamant that this was the potential great grape of the Tuscan Coast. I think people may have thought he was a touch mad early on. Today though his wines receive unanimous and glowing praise from all and sundry. Luca is one of the more intense winemakers I have met, singularly focused on his goals and it shows in his wines.
The Cifra is aged exclusively in concrete which allows the terroir of his home vineyard to shine through and the natural characters of Franc to leap to the fore. With that being said, the reason why this wine is so special, in my mind, is that while it is utterly gorgeous every year and always brimming with character, it clearly demonstrates it’s origins. It is a Tuscan wine first that happens to be made from Cabernet Franc.
The new release of Cifra is about to arrive at any moment and we are very excited to get our hands on some, and of course to offer it to our customers. We are offering the wine to our Italian buyers and previous supporters of Cifra first and with a 25% discount in straight six packs or dozens. I think $60 for a wine of this calibre is a bargain. I have tasted a bunch of wines of similar ilk from Tuscany recently that are expensive enough, when compared to Cifra and the quality it delivers, that it should make some producers in the region blush.
My advice with this wine remains unchanged over the years, buy it up in quantity. Drink it with reckless abandon but also try and put a little away for a while, if you can keep your hands off it. Cifra is, as I mentioned earlier, one of the great food wines of the world and a shinning beacon of quality, and value, from Tuscany. Once this sells out, which it will, then it is gone for another year. Don’t miss out.
