Elio Grasso Gavarini Langhe Nebbiolo 2019
Over the last decade or so, Grasso has stepped up quality in a meaningful way. There seems to be no limit where this small family-run estate can go from here. ANTONIO GALLONI
Elio Grasso is one of the undisputed stars of Monforte d’Alba, crafting some of the most sought-after wines in the region from the highly valued vineyard sites of Ginestra Casa Mate, Gavarini Chiniera and Rüncot. Barolo collectors will no doubt be well acquainted with his premium wines, but today we are offering you a chance to get inside the wonderful world of Elio Grasso and the commune of Monforte d’Alba, at a more widely accessible price point.
Grasso’s 2019 Langhe Nebbiolo comes from fruit sourced from a small plot of younger vines within the Gavarini vineyard, but unlike the Barolo wines, is made in tank with shorter fermentation to bring out a more immediate and approachable expression. It’s a wonderful mid-weighted wine that leans towards the ethereal, rather than the deep and structured side of the equation. It is beautifully perfumed, with a wonderful core of ripe red fruits and a distinct mineral core. It’s fresh and vivacious with a supple texture and charming nature. This is a wine that is a joy to drink now although it will cellar well in the short term.
