Isole E Olena Cepparello 2016
2016 Cepparello – The 2016 is shaping up to be epic. Don’t miss it! (97+) ANTONIO GALLONI
Paolo De Marchi describes 2016 as a cool year with a lot of sunshine and well-timed rains, conditions that resulted in slow ripening of the grapes and a late, relaxed harvest that started at the end of September and wrapped up during the second half of October. As for the wines, they are simply off the charts. I don’t know if there is much more I can say than that. ANTONIO GALLONI
Paolo doesn’t look for power but for elegance and finesse, which are the central threads running through all his wines. When praised for his achievements, he modestly replies with a twinkle in his eyes ‘I’m just trying to do what I believe in. DECANTER MAGAZINE
Paolo De Marchi is a blue-chip winemaker. MONICA LARNER, Wine Advocate
I guess, for me, this is the one I have been waiting for. I love the wines of Paolo De Marchi and while everything he makes is sensational, the heart of the estate, the jewel in the crown, the flagship is the Cepparello. This is the quintessential Sangiovese! The pinnacle of the variety from the region for me and from one of the greatest vintages in memory.
Having tasted a lot of 2016 Tuscan reds, I can put my hand on my heart and say it is the best vintage I have seen in my time. Others with longer teeth might proffer an alternative vintage, but 2016 is the complete package either way you look at it and destined to become a reference point for quality over decades to come.
As Galloni points out his 2016s are “off the charts”. Certainly, what I have tasted from Paolo in 16 would suggest this is entirely correct.
