Isole E Olena Chianti Classico 2017
If there is one winery that merits special recognition this year it is without question Isole e Olena. Paolo De Marchi presented a dazzling set of wines, starting with the 2017 Chianti Classico, a terrific example of the how the warm growing season added an extra element of dimension to some wines. Don’t miss these wines. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous 2020
Proprietor Paolo De Marchi has left an indelible and highly personal stamp on Isole e Olena, and all of Chianti Classico for that matter. Originally of Piedmontese descent, De Marchi stands apart from many of his colleagues for his vocal opinions and intense dedication to the vineyard above all else… The fruits of his hard labor and pricing are amply captured in these magnificent wines. ANTONIO GALLONI
Paolo de Marchi must be the surest bet in Italy. Paolo has the Midas touch, everything he makes turns to gold. Up and down the breadth of his portfolio from his cheapest wine to his iconic reds, everything here is fantastic.
In 2017 Paolo really has shown why he is regarded as one of Italy’s true master wine makers. Some lesser producers were caught out by the warmer weather of the season where here at Isole e Olena that has translated to a wine with a more luxuriant feel to it but that still retains a lively and cooling edge. The tannins are perfectly ripe and, while retaining their Sangio grit, play second fiddle to the lush fruit, just nudging everything in to place. It kind of makes me think of a hypothetical amalgam of the two previous vintages, the darker fruit and bolder nature of the 15 with the classic red fruit, perfume and grip of 16. It is, once again, an absolute ripper.
We are offering the wine with a 20% discount in straight six packs, making it $40 each. Just $40 each, for this Chianti. Once again this is not only one of the best examples from the region but also one of the best value.
