Isole E Olena Chianti Classico 2018
The 2018 harvest will lead to a five-star vintage for Chianti Classico wines, according to Giovanni Manetti, newly-elected president of the appellation’s Consorzio. DECANTER
Always outspoken, Paolo De Marchi is not shy when it comes to expressing his views. For that reason, he is not really part of the ‘in crowd’ of owners in Chianti Classico’s highly political ecosystem. But he doesn’t need to be, the wines speak for themselves. These wines are simply extraordinary. De Marchi’s Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is one of just a few wines that truly express what the top of the qualitative hierarchy is. ANTONIO GALLONI
Paolo doesn’t look for power but for elegance and finesse, which are the central threads running through all his wines. When praised for his achievements, he modestly replies with a twinkle in his eyes ‘I’m just trying to do what I believe in. DECANTER MAGAZINE
“Paolo de Marchi must be the surest bet in Italy. Paolo has the Midas touch, everything he makes turns to gold. Up and down the breadth of his portfolio from his cheapest wine to his iconic reds, everything here is fantastic.” That is how I opened the offer for the 2017 Chianti and I think I’ll just leave it as is, nothing has happened to change my opinion that Paolo is one of Italy’s greatest wine talents.
After the more turbo charged 2017 this is right back to classic Isole. It’s a great year for parts of Tuscany that feels a little like, the best, wines have a mix of some of the muscle and punch of 2015 and the more brightly fruited and snappy aspects of the 2016. The 18 Isole is gorgeously mid weight and aromatically enticing. Mulberry like notes mingle with more classic dark cherry and fresh ground fennel seeds. Interestingly there is also a thoroughly enticing savoury aspect here. It’s long, well structured and serious but most noticeably it’s sumptuous and suave.
Cool, calm and collected, that’s the vibe you get here. A great Chianti from a great vintage made by one of Italy’s most gifted winemakers.
We are offering the wine with a 20% discount in straight six packs, making it $41.65 each. Just $41 each, for this Chianti. Once again this is not only one of the best examples from the region but also one of the best value.
