Oakridge LVS Henk Chardonnay 2019

Winemaker and CEO David Bicknell has proved his worth time and again as an extremely talented winemaker. At the top of the Oakridge brand tier is 864, all Yarra Valley vineyard selections, only released in the best years JAMES HALLIDAY

Any discussion of the exalted state of Australian chardonnay today will include Dave Bicknell. Oakridge 864 chardonnays are among the best in the land as well as being at the stylistic cutting edge. HUON HOOKE, Gourmet Traveller Wine

I have called David Bicknell the greatest producer of Chardonnay in Australia on several occasions over a few years now. When questioned on how I came to that conclusion, which I get a lot (fair enough too, it’s a big call), I usually say it’s because over the last decade or so he has made more great examples than any other producer and that his 864 has been my top Aussie Chard in a few vintages.

It’s more than just the 864 though. There are a lot of producers in Oz who are making sensational booze and I am constantly amazed at the quality out there today. We are in a period of time now where Australian Chardonnay is better than it has ever been and it’s people like Bicknell who are leading the charge. While quality here is impeccable it’s also a matter of style and Oakridge is at the forefront in that regard. They are where the modern Oz Chard movement is right now, in the zone. Sophisticated and detailed wines that rely equally on the quality of their sites and a great team of winemakers to bring out the very best they have on offer.

While he may be most famous for his much lauded 864 I think the most impressive part of the story is that the wines are consistently brilliant across the range, up and down the hierarchy. Every Chardonnay the man makes is great and often he releases a few in any given year that are among the top from the Yarra. His LVS (Local Vineyard Series) has become a bit of a beacon of quality in the Valley as they often approach the 864 in quality but at a fraction of the price.

Now, with that all said and done, we have just been offered the LVS Henk Chardonnay. There isn’t a huge amount to go around and Bicknell has a rabid following amongst our customers so I urge you to get in quickly if you are interested. I think for a wine like this, of this calibre and quality, with this price tag, it is going to sell out quickly again. Don’t miss these. There aren’t many Chards in oz that can deliver what these do and even fewer at this kind of price point.
