Podere Le Boncie Le Trame Chianti Classico

Podere Le Boncie in the southern part of the Chianti Classico region near Castelnuovo Beradegna. This small estate (only a few hectares) is run by Giovanna Morganti, a super talented and thoughtful winemaker who farms to biodynamic principals and makes just two wines - Le Trame and '5'. While Le Trame was once labelled as Chianti Classico (as it still could be) Giovanna's has withdrawn from the consorzio because she believes rules changes are more about larger producers than the artisan small plot producer. Some of you may remember we used to sell this same wine as Chianti Classico but since 2011 vintage it has been labelled IGT. The other wine in the stable comes off a plot that was owned by the church and which Giovanna has the rights to farm and produce. The name - 5 - denotes the fact that it is a blend of the five varieties found in the plot - Sangiovese, Mammolo, Colorino, Fogliatonda & Ciliegiolo.

Both wines are fermented in open top wooden vats before being transferred to large oak for maturation which for '5' totals approximately 18 months and for Le Trame approximately 24 months.

Morganti's wines are redolent of their place and varieties. The Le Trame holds a little of the extra power of the southern location and layers in classic autumnal and dried herb into the dark cherry savoury flavour profile.

Both wines are terrific examples from an uncompromising artisan.
