You can buy just about anything bottled in Bordeaux in the 2016 vintage from the simplest Bordeaux to the grandest of classified growths or trophy wines from the Right Bank and be assured you’re getting a top-quality wine. JAMES SUCKLING

2016 is one of those rare vintages. Pretty much everywhere in Europe the wines were absolutely stunning. None more so than Bordeaux. It’s also the perfect vintage to stock up on the so-called ‘”lesser wines” and indulge regularly without the guilt usually associated with this region.

Bordeaux is often dismissed as home of the aristocrat (and indeed this does exist), with eye-watering prices and grand Chateau’s owned by Hedge funds and Investment banks. Yet in amongst all of this is a beating heart of small family owned estates, where traditionally made wines abound, often at rather modest prices. Chateau Poitevin is one such estate!

Guillaume Poitevin has been in charge since 1991, when he took over as a bright-eyed 18 year old. The 41 hectare estate sits at the very northern tip of the Medoc, where the slightly cooler conditions allow for later ripening. Blockbuster modern Bordeaux this is not, just classic claret with bags of character.

As is typical of the left bank, the blend is your classic Cabernet / Merlot, with a nice dollop of Petit Verdot. The wine sees about 30% new Oak for 14 months.

We’ve been importing Poitevin for well over a decade now. Regardless of vintage the wine is absolutely first-class, but this year it has undoubtedly gone up a few notches. It’s everything you could ask for in a bottle of Claret – elegant, medium-bodied and full of charm. More importantly, you don’t need to sit on it, It’s drinking absolutely beautifully and will continue to develop for the next 4-5 years if you can keep your hands of it.
