Red Claw by Yabby Lake Pinot Noir 2019
The arrival of the hugely talented Tom Carson as group winemaker has added lustre to the winery and its wines, making the first Jimmy Watson Trophy-winning Pinot Noir in 2014 and continuing to blitz the Australian wine show circuit with Single Block Pinot Noirs. JAMES HALLIDAY

Tom Carson, probably not a household name, not many winemakers are. He is a very well known name amongst the trade and, indeed with many savvy wine buyers here in Oz. Tom is one of the most awarded and well respected winemakers in the country. If there is an award to be handed out Tom has it in his stash (which I assume he keeps in a chest buried in his yard like some kind of wine pirate).
Not only is he one of the most talented and well respected winemakers in the country he is also one of our most experienced judges. He is like a tasting machine. His day job is for Yabby Lake in Mornington, where he has accumulated many of these awards, but he also makes wines under his own label, Serrat, which would be very familiar to a lot of people. He is generally regarded as one of the top handful of Pinot producers in Oz and continues to produce wines that are thoroughly convincing that he is deserving of that reputation.
While his top Block Wines from Yabby get all the hype and attention I think it is really telling that his entry level wine is often one of the best value prospects on the market. If you are paying in excess of $100 for a bottle of Pinot you would want to hope it was top notch. Finding an example of this most fickle of varieties at anywhere near this price that delivers on quality and shows the class this wine does is extremely difficult.
I know the PWS team are forever saying “good value Pinot is really hard to find” and we sound like a broken record at time but it is so true. We taste a lot of wine to find things like this to offer. While Tom Carson may be one of the more safe bets there are no guarantees with things like this so seeing this wine show so well again is a testament to his astute winemaking and we are very happy to be able to offer it to our customers for 20% off in a straight doze, so $25 each. It is insane value.
