Riorret Lusatia Park Chardonnay 2017

Elegant. Pure. Lean-ish but not worryingly so, the more-than-ample trade-off being exceptional length. Custard apple, stonefruit, citrus and oatmeal flavours have the wine singing. Touches of honeysuckle and lactose too. Wait a year and you’ll have a ripping drink on your hands. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, winefront.com May 2017

While it pays to tuck away premium wines for a few years, it’s not always possible. Willpower and foresight are just a few impediments, let alone the demands of life, especially the topsy turvy world we’re currently living. So when a sophisticated Yarra Valley Chardonnay with four years under its belt hit the tasting table we were delighted. It was delicious and affordable.

Direct from the producer you don’t need to age this, instead relish in the glory of this ripe and lithely framed chardonnay. It’s beautifully spiced from spending time in French oak. There’s a lovely play between white citrus, earth and smoky tones. It’s full of flavour and intrigue.

Lusatia Park is a serene and magical vineyard planted in 1985, it’s located in Woori Yallock in the Upper Yarra. The divide between north and south of the Warburton Highway is becoming more evident over the last decade or so. South of the highway lies the Upper Yarra, the cooler of the two that’s become a rich source of some of the best chardonnay and pinot of the Yarra Valley.

In 2016 this vineyard was up for sale, there was an onslaught of potential suitors knocking at the door. De Bortoli won out, they’d been working the site for years and knew its superior quality. Their future in the Yarra Valley is heavily tied to this vineyard. Stay tuned.

This Riorret (spells terroir backwards) chardonnay has hit its prime drinking window. In its youth, it was a little reticent and tightly wound, but time has tamed its tightly coiled cool fruited nature. This is an elegant and supreme chardonnay that has been treated to high-quality winemaking – whole bunch-pressed, wild-fermented with full MLF and matured for nine months in aged barriques.

We’re offering it today at over 20% in a 6 pack, or a dozen will attract a 25% discount. There’s not a lot to go around, so if you need a delicious chardonnay at a great price then stock up.
