Roche Neuves 2019 - Luminous and Brilliant Loire

Domaine des Roches Neuves is famous as a producer of wonderful biodynamic Saumur; Germain has for years been making some of the region’s most compelling wines. A disciple of Charly Foucault of Clos Rougeard, he looks for similar purity and clarity, aiming for the cleanest expression of fruit without delivering rustic tannins or underripe flavors. These wines are some of the most striking examples of Cabernet Franc (and, increasingly, also Chenin Blanc) that you will find in France today… his wines are still on the top tier in the appellation.CHRIS KISSACK

Loire 2019; the latest in a string of great vintages in the Loire, the warm 2019 vintage is characterised by a surprising freshness. JIM BUDD,

Much of the finest Cabernet Franc from Saumur-Champigny is being now made by Thierry Germain at Domaine des Roches Neuves. The elegance, precision and purity of Germain’s Cabernet Franc is something else entirely, almost Burgundian. JASON WILSON,

Roche Neuves makes some of the most intriguing and compelling cabernet francs of the Loire. A protégé of Charly Foucault of the legendary estate Clos Rougeard, Thierry Germain moved from Bordeaux to the Loire in the early 90s. It’s clear he learnt his wizardry ways with cabernet franc at Rougeard as the wines share an ethereal kinship.

Purity and clarity are words that come to mind when tasting this cabernet franc. Its immediacy is a delicious embrace of wet earth, blue and black fruits and sweet spice, finely yet firmly structured with succulent graphite tannins and a stony mineral finish.

While his top wines are holy grail material, this domain cuvee is extraordinarily delicious. It doesn’t demand a double decant or time in the cellar. You could age it for a few years, but it’s a beauty right now in all its primal glory. Upon opening evocative aromas of graphite, pepper and blueberries leap out of the glass. There’s a captivating vibrancy to the fruit that keeps drawing you back.

Thierry prizes purity, fineness and drinkability over rusticity and hard tannins. The vibrancy and detail on this wine is a standout.  In the vineyard, biodynamics are championed, lending to the purity of the grapes expression. A mix of vine age – up to 70 year old go into this wine  which shows in its depth of flavours.
