Seghesio Barolo 2016

I have easily come to the conclusion that Barolo 2016 is a vintage to invest in. In a vintage such as 2016 there are over-achievers on practically every level, from Barolo Classico to the most admired crus.  WALTER SPELLER

Barolo’s ability to age and metamorphose into a beautiful beast  is one of the greatest hallmarks of aging wine. Flavours move into tertiary tones of earth and leather and tannins lengthen, forming silken chains. So when a glorious vintage like 2016 comes along from ‘an under the radar gem’ then you should take note.

To get a Barolo of this quality under $100 – the stars really have aligned. Classical Barolo from a classical vintage at an exceptional price.

Riccardo Seghesio is a local Piedmontese. At the demise of sharecropping, his father bought a few plots just down from the Monforte chapel. He worked the vines, selling his crop to the local co-operative. His sons, Riccardo and Aldo set about to make their own wine when they took charge.

Today Riccardo is supported by his niece and nephews – Michaela, Marco and Sandro in Monforte d’Alba making timeless Barolos, classical in their composure.

Classically styled Barolos tend to pull on the heart strings of many wine lovers. There’s a rigidity to their youthful tannins that demands attention and patience. To offset the sternness, top notes of florals and fresh earth appear and overtime a silky tannin thread forms. There’s also a clarity to the fruit, due to the lack of oak blanketing.

These are wines you want to put away for a celebratory birthday or anniversary. Something you can forget about for a decade and reward you and your friends upon opening.  Serve it over a slow and languid lunch with friends and a homemade lasagne. Let these two be the centrepiece of the meal, warming up with a negroni.

The hype about the 2016 vintage is real. This will be one of our last offers from this outstanding vintage.

We’ve only got a smattering of this  glorious Barolo. Save over 20% when you buy it in a six pack, making it $85 a bottle.  Or single bottles are $99 each.
