The late architect Bruce Tomlinson built a strikingly beautiful winery (heritage-listed by the Shire of Busselton) that is now in the hands of winemaker son Edward (Ed), who consistently makes elegant wines in classic Margaret River style. A midwinter (French time) trip to Pomerol in Bordeaux to research merlot is an indication of his commitment. Exports to the UK. JAMES HALLIDAY

The inaugural release. Estate-grown, wild ferment, 14 months maturation in 25% new French barriques. An interesting bouquet, a bit gamey and earthy, with the oak having an influence. Fruit comes through more clearly on the palate, the red-berried flavours quite soft and rich, fitting the usual expectation of merlot. Ripe, almost sweet tannin rounds it out.
