Warramate Cabernet Sauivgnon 2018

An insiders secret no longer, for those wanting a slice of pedigreed Yarra Valley cabernet on a budget then this is for you.

Old vines, premium location and the Midas touch of winemaker Sarah Crowe have propelled this humble wine to great heights. It’s made at the same winery as Yarra Yering and is a lucky benefactor of the declassified Yarra Yering wines.

Since Sarah arrived at Yarra Yering she has been bagging awards and achievements, not to mention the quality of these wines has soared. She has been awarded the Winemaker of the Year by Halliday in 2017 and just recently Huon Hooke placed Yarra Yering in the top spot for Winery of the Year. Her unassuming nature sits in stark contrast to her brilliant sense of winemaking.

Planted in 1970, Warramate vineyards adjoin Yarra Yering. In 2011 it was bought by the owners of Yarra Yering. This is the wedge between Coldstream estate and Yarra Yering. The quality of this cabernet shows it belongs in the dress circle of the Yarra.

It lures you in with lead pencils and violets, the palate rolling into a gorgeous ball of black fruits, spice and subtle tertiary tones of earth. It’s elegantly framed, fine and grippy tannins wrap around a flavoursome core of fruit. It finishes with ample length and carry and makes you think could this be the best value cabernet out there? I think so.

This is an overachiever for the money. I had to ask Sarah how she got so much goodness into the bottle at this price point. Her answer ‘well there is a little bit of declassified Yarra Yering 1 in there too.’  Bingo!

2018 was a cool classic vintage, with a welcome dry stretch in the final month that enabled the grapes to gain weight and ripen. You can see the lovely delineated structure and fine tannins in this cabernet.

It’s drinking beautifully now with a few years under its belt, but it can also be kept for a few years if you prefer your tannins a little more moulded and a more savoury fruit profile. But as we find ourselves in the depths of winter, this affordable beauty is hard to resist right now.

We’ve sharpened the price across the board, a 6 pack for $150 or a dozen for $288 is great value.
