Bannockburn 2021 – Invincible Australian Icons

Bannockburn has never really been out of form but I get the feeling that winemaker Matt Holmes and team have the ship about where they want it to be, now. CAMPBELL MATTINSON

The late Stuart Hooper had a deep love for the wines of Burgundy and was able to drink the best. When he established Bannockburn, it was inevitable that pinot noir and chardonnay would form the major part of the plantings…Bannockburn is still owned by members of the Hooper family, who continue to respect Stuart’s strong belief in making wines that reflect the flavours of the (certified organic) vineyard. JAMES HALLIDAY

This fresh release of the Bannockburn’s latest Pinot and Chardonnay shouts from the rooftops that winemaker Matt Holmes is in sync with the vines and volcanic soils of this prestigious property.  The wines capture the fruit richness and intensity we love Bannockburn for, the chardonnay is perfumed and deliciously ripe, carrying a thread of rich saline minerality. The pinot is heady and silken, taking you on a wild and spicy ride.

Not to beat around the bush, these are the best releases we’ve tasted. It’s no surprise they come from the highly anticipated 2021 vintage. A long cool ripening period pushed picking to start in March, allowing the grapes to amass flavour and build ripe tannins.

Unfortunately, 2021 produced tiny yields, pinot was down by 50% and chardonnay didn’t fare much better. No single vineyard wines were made except for a small clutch of SRH Chardonnay. Both of these 2021 Estate releases include fruit from Bannockburn’s most pedigreed old-vine and close-panted blocks. No Serre was made in 2021, the estate wine has been super-charged with juice from the close-planted vineyards, it’s simply outstanding.

Founder, Stuart Hooper was a purist and Burgundy lover, his uncompromising approach to establishing the vineyards is clear in the luminous quality of these wines. It’s no surprise the soils echo those in Burgundy, a mix of volcanic soils over clay and limestone. To add to this, organic farming has been adopted in more recent years, taking the fruit clarity to even greater heights.

Old vines play a pivotal role, both come from vines dating back to 1976. Both wines see less than 25% new oak, a mix of sizes for the chardonnay. As critic Jeni Port points out it’s ‘true to the Bannockburn style which offers both power and finesse.’ On the pinot, Port commends it as ‘A wine of real gravitas and presence.’ One of the standout features is the whole bunch earthy spice (just 20% used) and the gliding tannins. Both will age supremely well.

Low yields in 2021 are followed by a very small and cool 2022 vintage. Not much wine was made, so fill your cellar with these poignant 2021 wines. We’re offering single bottles for $61 or straight 6 Pack buys for $342 ($57 each). There are also a handful of magnums available, you can be sure with will go the distance.

  1. Bannockburn Pinot Noir 2021
    Bannockburn Pinot Noir 2021

This is a beauty. Fragrant and attractive from the outset but then expansive on the palate as well. Earth, twigs, root vegetables and cherries with woodsy spice notes rippling throughout. Tension and flow, texture and tannin. There's a smoky meatiness to the aftertaste, mixed in with decaying red roses, and it's most attractive way for the wine to sail out. Drink it now, drink it later; it will deliver. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, winefront.com

A wine of real gravitas and presence, the '21 reflects a most impressive year. Abundant, enticing aromas in pristine red fruits, maritime herbs, humus and dusty beets. The palate fairly bristles in fruit freshness and energy, the tannins pricking the tastebuds and laying the foundation for a long life. Oak? Yes, it's evident in the texture and the binding but totally integrated. JENI PORT, winecompanion.com

  2. Bannockburn Chardonnay 2021
    Bannockburn Chardonnay 2021

Bannockburn chardonnay is never short of flavour and so to this release, though the fresh zing of the finish brings a more modern twist, arguably. Pear, grapefruit, peach, cracked wheat and cedar flavours come strong and convincing, aided by citrus and fennel notes, the latter especially notable on the finish. The flavour of tinned pear here is as strong as it is delicious, it must be noted. This is an excellent release; it's good for drinking now but it has many years up its sleeve. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, winefront.com

True to the Bannockburn style which offers both power and finesse. The former is set in structure and solid in body. The latter is all about a world of marvellous fruit and oak flavours: mandarin skin, nectarine, white peach, buttered toast, almond bread, quince paste. It's dense, lifted by a citrusy acidity that is just so cleansing, so right. JENI PORT, winecompanion.com
