IT’S BOLLI BABY, YEAH!
Bollinger La Grande Annee 2014 – The 2014 La Grande Année is stunning. In fact, it is one of the best recent editions I can remember tasting. (98) ANTONIO GALLONI

In the 2014 vintage, Bollinger has once again produced both a Grande Année and Grande Année Rosé. The result is two very elegant, precise, giving Champagnes, with all the mid-palate intensity one expects from Bollinger but defined more by purity and precision than by power. Charming and expressive out of the gates, they’re also built to age with grace. Bollinger’s Denis Brunner describes the 2014 vintage as one of pure “classicism” for the house, after the more “baroque” 2012s, and that’s a very concise summation of the distinctions readers will find in the glass, which I’m at a loss to better. But I’ll add that the quality of these 2014s is indicative of the serious agronomy that distinguishes Bollinger’s vineyards as, along with Roederer’s, the best maintained of any big houses’ in the region. Both wines reviewed here come warmly recommended. WILLIAM KELLEY, Wine Advocate

When Bolli is on form it has to be one of the most enjoyable bottles of booze you can drink. There is something luxurious about Grande Annee, it’s a hedonists wine, something for the bacchanalian in all of us. A wine with all the bells and whistles that you want with this kind of Champagne. You pull the top off one of these and pour it around everyone is happy. It will appeal to anyone anywhere at any time.

What more could you ask for? Well a tonne more when you are spending this kind of money, if that was it then I wouldn’t offer it. This release of LGA delivers all that upfront pleasure, and man does it do it well, I could drink a bottle of this and usually one or two glasses is enough for me (actually this is a lie, I will drink great Champagne until the cows come home, but I am trying to make a point) where as the 2014 Grande Annee is just so damn good right now. So much so that perhaps the stunning quality of the wine that backs up all these joyously extroverted characteristics could be overlooked in the midst of the moment.

What the 2014 delivers is equal parts unadulterated sex appeal and an incredible amount of class and sophistication. This intoxicating, powerhouse of pleasure is cut through like a laser with crystalline acidity and a humungous whopping hit of chalky, palate staining minerality. The, very long, finish is expansive and emboldened by natural fruit weight and toasty richness, but still that driving mineral laden freshness leaves the palate feeling enlivened and gets the salivary glands humming. It’s a bit of a wow wine to be honest. Brilliant stuff that will appeal to the purists and those who just love sumptuously delicious bubbles. What more could you ask for? Nothing really, it has everything you want in great Champers and then some.

Without harping on about the global shortage of Champagne, there still is a big gap of things and so wines like this are vanishing when offered these days. So, please do get in nice and early if you are interested, I assume these will sell out very quickly.

    Bollinger Grande Annee 2014
The 2014 La Grande Année is stunning. In fact, it is one of the best recent editions I can remember tasting. What comes through most is the wine's sizzling energy and tension, qualities that aren't often associated with Bollinger, where the Champagnes tend to show more breadth and volume. In 2014, readers will find a Grande Année built on linear intensity and drive.
The 2014 is a blend taken from 19 villages, 61% Pinot Noir and 39% Chardonnay instead of the more typical 70/30 mix. For the second time in two decades (the first was 2007), Verzenay takes the lead in the Pinots over Aÿ, more or less an inverse from the norm. Verzenay, a north-facing village in the Montagne de Reims that saw less rain than Aÿ and most of the Vallée de la Marne, yields Pinots of energy more than volume. That, married with Chardonnays mostly from the Côtes des Blancs (predominantly Chouilly, Vertus, Oiry and Cramant), results in a truly magical Grande Année that will delight Champagne fans for several decades. I can't recommend the 2014 highly enough. It's a total knock-out. (98) ANTONIO GALLONI

Racy acidity drives this mouthwatering Champagne, enlivening the rich panoply of flavors. Features a fine and creamy mousse that's still a lively springboard for aromas and flavors of crème de cassis, glazed tangerine, roasted hazelnut, ground coffee, pickled ginger and white blossoms. Long and satiny, with minerally salt and chalk notes gaining momentum on the lasting finish. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. (97) WINE SPECTATOR
