Correggia Nebbiolo & Arneis New Arrivals
It’s impossible to understand Roero without talking about Matteo Correggia; the first who believed in the potential of this land so beautiful and vast. Matteo’s vision continues on, with constant sacrifice from his wife Ornella Costa and their enduring enologist Luca Rostagno. Today it’s time for Giovanni, Matteo’s son, to take hold of the reigns. SLOW WINE ITALY 2020
I have been drinking the Correggia wines since my student days, and have rarely been disappointed, especially at the entry-level, where so many of these wines also deliver fabulous value. ANTONIO GALLONI
Future bright, legacy intact, pioneer producer and still top of the tree in the burgeoning Roero zone. MICHAEL MCNAMARA
On our recent catch up with Giovanni Correggia in March this year, it was clear he was confident in his skin and surrounds. This young man who has grown up with his dad’s strong legacy was at ease talking about the wines, vineyards and his decision-making process. His contentment and confidence are evident in the wines he is making.
Nestled within Piedmont, Roero is a bucolic region, just north of Barolo. Its landscape is more open and rolling than its prestigious neighbour. There’s less drama to the region which is beautifully captured in their pretence-free wines. The soils are younger and sandier, flecked with marine sediments and the wines are particularly fresh and lively.
Today we’re offering the 2019 Arneis along with the rare cellar release of the 2014 Arneis Val di Preti. The youthful arneis is delicately framed and plays on pomme fruit and earthy tones while the aged arneis is breathtaking in its originality and deliciousness. Described by the Correggia’s as an ‘echo of the salt and sea that covered Roero millions of years ago,’ its honeyed layers and freshness are akin to an aged Chablis.
For the reds it’s hard to go past the new vintage of 2019 Nebbiolo, a pliant and silky Nebbiolo boasting a core of vibrant black and red berries – unfortunately, yields were down 50% due to a dry summer so this may be our only shipment. We also have a small restock of their jewel in the crown 2017 Nebbiolo Val di Preti, a single vineyard nebbiolo from their oldest vines. Located just behind their house, these 85-year-old vines on sandy soils create an intoxicating wine of depth and structure with an underlying tow of freshness.
These wines offer a delicious immediacy. Oak has been dialled down, letting the fruit take centre stage. They’re not showy or brash but more a delightful tease giving you glimpses of its birthplace that won’t burn a hole in your pocket. It’s clear to see how Correggia is considered one of Piedmonte’s best
If you don’t have time to cellar your wines or money to burn, these are for you. Saying that these wines could be put away for a few years, but it’s not essential. Part of their beauty is to see nebbiolo with a precocious side.
