Groiss Gemischter Satz 2020
Groiss Gemischter Satz 2020
Groiss is particularly grateful for the ‘gorgeous’ vineyards planted by her granny. ‘Most of them are 50 years and older and in these times people put much more focus on which varieties fit on which appellations and on which soil. I´m also proud that I still have many old autochthonous varieties in my Gemischter Satz vineyards like Hietl Rote, Silberweisse, Weisse Vöslauer and Graue Vöslauer… JULIA HARDING MW
What grows together goes together is often cited when trying to work out food and wine matches. Think Sancerre and goats cheese, Chianti and Bistecca Florentina, fino sherry with serrano ham. These are pairings based on tradition and regionality, firmly imprinted on the countries’ collective taste memory.
You could extend this thinking to grapes that are grown and fermented together. They can harmonise and collectively express a ‘somewhereness’ of their plot. In fact, aromas are heightened, texture is created and the wines clarity is improved. There’s a synergy to these wines, the flavours and textures complement rather than compete.
Gemischter Satz is the traditional field blend wine of Vienna made from different grapes grown together in the same vineyard. They’re picked at the same time and then co-fermented. It has a long history embedded in Austria and was known for making the jug wines served at taverns across its homeland. But it was cheap and simple, made from grapes grown in poor sites with little care.
Enter Ingrid Groiss. She ditched a high-flying career in marketing to return home to Breitenwaida in the Weinvertal region of Austria to take custodianship of her grandmother’s vines. Groiss, along with a handful of passionate and determined winemakers has led the revitalisation of this traditional style over the last decade. While the quality of these styles has boomed, their humble price tags have not.
This is a crisp and peppery Austrian white. Its lively nature is thrilling to take in. Centred around dried herbs, white florals and pome fruits, it’s spring in a glass. It’s attracted the attention of two high profile critics, James Suckling and Gary Walsh. You’ll want some of this for your picnics. Serve it with a spread of cured meats, cheese and rillettes. Just add a friend and it’s replete.
Put simply, this is a delicious original wine for $27 each in a 6 pack buy. I couldn’t resist and have already opened my dozen. It has great zip and drive with a slight tingle that will give you a little pep – something we all need right now.

I loved drinking this wine, GARY WALSH
Groiss Gemischter Satz 2020Layers of flavour and texture. Apple. Peach. Sherbet. Tingly. Juicy. Spicy. Peppery. Dried herbs. Root vegetable earthiness. A sort of flour and pepper texture to it, with a spicy fruity finish of fine length. I loved drinking this wine. A strong recommendation.
