Guigal Cotes du Rhone Rouge 2017 375ml
Saturated ruby. Ripe black raspberry and cherry aromas are complicated by suggestions of cracked pepper, allspice and pungent flowers. Supple, appealingly sweet red and blue fruit preserve flavors gain energy with air, and a bright mineral element adds back-end lift. Supple tannins add shape to a persistent, floral-accented finish, which leaves cherry and spice notes behind. JOSH RAYNOLDS

How Guigal year after year extracts such quality from such volume is astonishing. Famous for paying his growers well above market value for their grapes is probably the key. The fact that he treats this wine with every care and respect that her treats his upper eschelon wines is probably the other. Either way this is one of the most consistent wines to come out of France. PWS

The Chapoutiere range is huge and it is incredible to behold the quality across the board from this famous producer given the sheer amount of wine they make.

This is off his families, mixed-use farm and sits outside the typical Condrieu framework both in style and place.

There is an intriguing struck-flint, mineral note mixed with floral edges and fresh apricot. It's zippy an fresh with vibrant peach and apricot fruit to the fore. It lively and full of energy and raring to go. PWS

    A. Mano Primitivo 2017
Mark has spent decades developing relationships with many old-time growers, learning and embracing their traditions and applying a winning combination of technology, passion and common sense, to best express what Puglia has to offer. Mark says “in our wines, you will always be able to taste the grapes and the vineyard they come from – in my mind, this is the true meaning of terroir.

Better known as Zinfandel in the states the Italian version really seems like a distant cousin at best when you try great versions like this. Where Zin goes to boysenberry and blackberry fruits with a punch of baking spice this definitely travels down a more savoury path. The fruit give way to a dried plum and black-raspberry. The spices also look a bit more earthy with cumin and anise crushed together with clove. You can feel the warmth in the mouth but there is still a really nice hit of acidity that cleans it up beautifully. Simple and easy to enjoy but true to form and unmistakeably Italian. PWS

Around 70% grenache, 25% mataro, 5% carignan from multiple vineyards with an average age of 87yo. Wild yeast-open fermented with a portion of whole bunches with some time on skins and touch of older oak to round it out.

Its lifted and pretty on the nose that follows into a pure, plump and juicy plum and berry fruits, with a touch of sour cherry bite and plenty of spicy on the close. Sits somewhere between light and medium bodied with lovely balance and plenty of freshness. Juicy and up-front deliciousness that keeps on giving. We dare you to have just one glass! PWS

  10. Shaw & Smith Shiraz 2017 375ml
    Shaw & Smith Shiraz 2017 375ml

It’s from such an unusual/cold/late season that shiraz was picked four weeks later than average.

It’s a peppery, twiggy, bunchy shiraz. It smells, feels and tastes like the result of a cool season. This wine will split drinkers down the middle. It’s smoky, herbal, berried, smooth-skinned and stringy at once. It both walks the tightrope and is one. There are menthol, alpine herb, walnut and peppercorn characters here in abundance. There are also substantial ropes of well-placed tannin. It’s a medium-bodied wine with a great deal to say. CAMMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

What can we say about this wonderful producer? Nothing that hasn't already been said. The consistency and quality is really quite astonishing and with Adama Wadawitz at the winemaking helm this a trend that will continue its upward trajectory. Their secret has been to continually improve and tweak the operations and that shows in every bottle. One of Australia's great estates. PWS

  11. Casa da Passarella a Descoberta Dao Tinto 2019
Casa da Passarella a Descoberta Dao Tinto 2019

Made in stone lagars and aged in cement tanks along with some large old wooden vats, it's a very typical DÂ o blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz (elsewhere, Tempranillo), Alfrocheiro and Jaen (aka Mencia). 13.5% a/v, ta 5.96 ph 3.60. A Descoberta means 'to be discovered' and the somewhat mystical label, a box tagged 1942 is a folkloric reference to an early version of a time capsule a box hidden in the stone walls of the house of Passarella containing a will to be opened 50 years hence and directing the riches of the box be re-distributed to the poor. The box was empty. Enrichment comes from the intangible not the material, it seems.

A lovely wine supple, fleshy and spicy, with extra delicate tannin and oak. From lead-off, the cherry-chocolate fruit really shows the Dao granite, and is laden with wiry dark herbs. In the mouth, it's fleshy-meaty and mineral fresh - round with good movement and fruit-earth interplay. It has excellent presence in the mouth but is not reliant on weight for the show. Wonderfully composed, it sits and radiates, effortless in affect. Gorgeous delicate tannin is the frame, rimming the mouth and allowing the fruit and spicy acid to radiate delicately. A wonderful advertisement for varietal blends.

Petilia Le Sepaie Irpinia Aglianico 2017
In the 2017 Aglianico Le Sepaie I’m finding a savory display, leading off with a whiff of animal musk and smoky minerals, as notes of black cherry, spice, violet florals, and dark earth tones come forward. On the palate, soft textures give way to fresh red fruits, offset by zesty acids and spice, as a coating of minerals drench the senses. The finish is long yet energetic, as acids linger, along with spicy red berries and a hint of young tannin. The 2017 Le Sepaie has energy to burn and drinks beautifully today, yet it should also excel over the next five or more years in the cellar. It offers tremendous value. ERIC GUIDO, Vinous Media

If you ever want to show someone just how glorious the riesling grape can be, serve them a glass of this. It’s agenda-free riesling, fundamentally delicious, intense with flavour but not cutting, gorgeous at every turn, cellarworthy if you so desire, but in no way is patience a prerequisite. Lime, orange blossom, a gently candied aspect, a slip of pure lemon. It’s bold and it’s beautiful. (95) JAMES HALLIDAY

  14. Domaine Vin de Savoie Dupasquier Jacquere 2017
Domaine Vin de Savoie Dupasquier Jacquere 2017
Domaine Dupasquier in the appropriately-named hamlet of Aimavigne has long been viewed as the benchmark for Altesse from the Marestel slopes, which offer a panorama awesome in its own way even for someone familiar with far steeper sites in the Valais, lower Mosel, or Douro. Dupasquiers' old vines in this once-fabled site do indeed nearly always give something impressive as well as age-worthy. DAVID SCHILDNECHT, eRobertParker.com

The domaine makes a number of wines from in and around the Savoy region and this has become a bit of staff favourite over the years. Jacquere is the variety and is often made to make simple wines but in the hands of Dupasqiuer takes on a little more interest and depth.

Soft and supple in its delivery with gentle fruit and white pepper on the nose that leads into a minerally and lightly textured line on the palate. A bit of time on lees gives a gentle grip and adds a little something extra to the wine.

...the wines are as impressive as his experience suggests they should be. JAMES HALLIDAY

Michael was once a jewellery valuer for Sotheby's but moved to Australia in 2001 to pursue studies and a career in winemakeing - and we are glad he did. There is nothing in his porftolio that isn't either well crafted, beautifully handled and/or speaks so eloquently of place. His work in Australia and abroad is a veritable who's who of producers including Cullen, Giaconda, Henschke, Shaw + Smith, Coldstream Hills and Veritas. In France he cut his teeth with Domaine Leflaive, Meo-Camuzet, Vieux Telegraphe and Trevallon. Wow!

Hand-picked in Greenock and Stone Well, wild fermented in open fermenter and closed puncheons, 5% whole bunch, matured in French oak barrels for 21 months (10% new). Blended with 15% Eden Valley and Adelaide Hills Shiraz. PWS

Fruit takes the front seat here, blackcurrants, note of red fruit and a dusting of cinnamon spice. Medium bodied, smooth and loaded with velvety tannin. Nothing overdone or out of place.

  17. Eloquesta Mudgee Cotto 2017
    Eloquesta Mudgee Cotto 2017
Our Sydney PWS Manager, Andrew has chosen this for his 2021 Staff Pick:

Take Chardonnay grapes from a highly awarded hillside block in Mudgee, press off into new and old French and Hungarian oak hogsheads and leave outside for 3 years on lees through all weather (under cover of course) and what do you get? A deliciously rich and deeply golden coloured Chardonnay that is as rich on the mid palate as it is dry and fresh on the finish. Dried apricots on the nose follow through with deep tangerine citrus and butterscotch to a fresh, dry finish. Think Jura spliced into Jerez.  I love this wine because its different, it’s quirky, but mostly because it’s delicious. ANDREW GEDDES, PWS

    Gianfranco Alessandria Barbera d'Alba 2017

The 2017 Barbera d'Alba (with 12,000 bottles made) shows a tight and compact expression that releases lots of generous fruit, mostly blackberry and summer cherry, especially prominent in this hot vintage. In fact, this native grape shows its best results in the warm growing seasons. Sweet candied cherry and blackberry preserves brighten the palate (the wine only sees contact with stainless steel). 19. Bellenda Cosi È Col Fondo
    Bellenda Cosi È Col Fondo
The NV Conegliano Valdobbiadene Così È is a fun Pet-Nat style Prosecco, having undergone a secondary fermentation in bottle. Notes of sour lemon, pineapple, granny smith and crushed stone can all be found in the glass. It’s soft in texture yet bone dry, with stimulating acids and minerals which work to completely cleanse the palate between each sip. Flavors of dried apricot and pear linger along with a twang of mouthwatering citrus. Although a bit funky, this is a pleasure to taste. (92) ERIC GUIDO, www.vinousmedia.com

Here the secondary fermentation in bottle is encouraged by the addition of unfermented must (juice) of the same wine. The wine does not undergo disgorgment and so retains the natural yeast sediment which, if disturbed, gives the wine a slightly hazy appearance. This is a nod to the traditional styles of the region enjoyed by the Cosmo family in the days of their parents and grandparents. It presents with a slightly softer profile and more subtlety of character than some of the other cuvees. For me it is the kind of wine that you want to pop at the start of a long lunch or dinner with friends, it is eminently digestible and provides serious ease for consumption. ROSCOE

A notable patch of Yarra Valley gamay here.

Pretty, floral and red cherry/raspberry scented and flavoured red. Crisp, crunchy texture, bright, light, sour-edged fruit character, slightly nettle-y, leafy thing through the wine too. Blood orange flavours and acidity finish the wine. Neat and tidy, vibrant feeling lighter red, right on the edge of ripeness. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

No details to hand and a new outfit on me, but the wine is very good. Chardonnay from the Adelaide Hills.

Here we go. This has the crackle of quality. It's well fruited, is bursting with spice, has flint tucked into its shirt and fig slung around its neck. Acidity tears through the wine like a kid at a new bike. Flavour chases right on after it. This is one of those 'all we have learned' wines. You can feel history past and present informing its every step. I'm not mentioning value. The wine does it for me. (95) CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

  22. Nick Spencer Gundagai Llight Dry Red Blend 2021
Nick Spencer Gundagai Llight Dry Red Blend 2021

No, this is not just another "Light Dry Red" playing to the recent fads but a serious nod to the 'Burgundies' of the 50's 60's and 70's which Nick Spencer is paying homage to. These were classic light-bodied Shiraz and Shiraz/ Pinot blends that emerged from the Hunter and are highly sort after now. They are back in fashion and tasting this it's not hard to understand why.

The style can be a little hit or miss and getting that combo of pinot and shiraz just right is critical, which Nick has done a brilliant job of here. A touch of sour cherry, cranberry and strawberries that plays off broodier black currant and blackberry fruit swirling around in the background. It's served on a palate that is crunchy and vibrant with lovely fine structure and soft melting tannins. Great poise between the fruit and other elements and while this is wonderfully easy to enjoy there is a plenty going on here that belies the seriousness of the wine.

While its ready to go now and easy to love if you put a couple of bottles away for just a couple of years or so I think you would be a very happy camper!

  23. La Dama Vini Valpoilicella Classico Ripasso Superiore 2017
La Dama Vini Valpoilicella Classico Ripasso Superiore 2017
Established by Gabriele and Miriam Dalcanele in 2006, La Dama represents the new breed of winemakers in the region. Modern, fresh yet compelling wines coaxed from organically farmed vineyards in the fabled commune of Negrar, home to some of the great names including the legendary Giuseppe Quintarelli.

Working only with the native varieties of Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Molinara, the 10 hectares of vineyards are all hand-picked with oak influence kept to a minimum in order to ensure the vineyard speaks for itself in the glass.

This is light on its feet compared to some other Superiore style wines of the regions and is so much better for it. Pure, bright with a lovely sparkle to the concentrated black and red fruits and that gentle lifted spice that is so appealing. There is still a lovely richness to the palate that come from the Ripasso treatment and it adds a lovely bit of depth and plushness that is so pleasing. PWS

    Correggia Roero Nebbiolo 2018

On of our newest members, Dylan has chosen this for his staff pick for 2021, here's why:

As the end of another year looms and the festive season seems to have started already, I’ve decided to lighten the load for my family — I’ve told Grandma to ditch the Christmas cake and buy a bottle of this Nebbiolo instead. When a wine bustles with spices & juicy cherries why bother with a cake? More Grandma Dylan time and less time baking I say. Enjoy. DYLAN VAN OIRSCHT, PWS

If Cru Barolo is Kanye, this wine is Drake. Sure Kanye is a more serious offering and inspires deeper, layered conversations and thought, but really, who do you want to bring to the party when lockdown ends. I'm texting Drake.

First little whiff and it's a joy already, it smells like Christmas morning with perfectly ripe cherry, a little spice here, dried herbs there. Take a sip and there's a lovely little hint of sweetness and delicacy amidst a tart , juicy backdrop before a curatin of fine tannin sweeps your palate clean. This is a side of nebbiolo anyone can wrap their laiughing gear around and experience happiness. ALEX DOBSON, PWS
