Rob has a winemaking background in South Australia, with numerous research trips to USA, Europe and South Africa. With a passion for Grenache, Mack and his wife, Louise Rhodes, launched Aphelion in 2015. Their 2016 McLaren Vale Grenache is a very impressive start for this new brand.
Rob Mack
Raised in Seaford, just North of McLaren Vale, SA, Rob moved to Sydney to study in 2005 where he met his future wife Louise.
Prior to striking out on his own with Aphelion, Rob worked at Kilikanoon in the Clare Valley, Laithwaites Wine People in Sydney as a Planner and Buyer, and McLaren Vale Winemakers in McLaren Vale. To broaden learnings beyond the textbook and beyond Australia many research trips have been taken, including to California, Oregon and Washington State in the USA, Constantia, Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschoek in South Africa, Umbria, Tuscany, Liguria and Piemonte in Italy, and Marlborough, Waipara, Hawkes Bay, Central Otago, Martinborough in New Zealand.
Rob's a smart cookie with a business degree from UTS and a great palate after completing the AWRI Advanced Wine Assessment Course, WSET Level 3 Cert and wine judging for Rutherglen Wine Show, National Fortified Wine Show & McLaren Vale Wine Show this year. In 2016 Rob will complete his final year of a Bachelor of Wine Science at Charles Sturt Uni.
Aphelion Wine was founded in June 2015 by husband and wife team Rob Mack and Louise Rhodes. Guided by our desire to produce Genuine, Authentic, Quality McLaren Vale Grenache, we handcraft select parcel wines and produce styles that are perfectly matched to food.
In his (limited) spare time, when not tinkering in the winery, Rob likes to go mountain bike riding in the Willunga Hills, walk his wine dog on the beach, play with his wine cat, travel, go skiing, and is a big Rugby Union fan.
He really is an all round nice guy.
