Chichibu Distillery

Ichiro Akuto’s was born into a family that brewed sake for more than 300 years. Around 1945 his grandfather started distilling whisky in addition to sake. Akuto’s father, continued the Hanyu Distillery until Japan’s economy downturn at the tun of the century and the marker for Sake fell out.

Re-establishing the Hanyu distillery as Chichibu in 2008, Akuto bought his formidable skills, extensive experiences at Suntory and family legacy into the fold. Buying back 400 casks of Hanyu distillery whiskey he started his venture with the famous Ichiro’s Malt Whisky and has expanded into single expressions and specialty releases that are highly regarded and sought after in the world of whisky.

All the whiskies are natural colour and non chill filtering to produce a very pure whisky. At the heart of the Chichibu Distillery are two pear shaped copper pot stills manufactured by Forsyth in Elgin, Scotland each still holding about 2,000 litres of distilleries precious spirit.
