Vietti

I can’t think of too many estates in Piedmont that have raised the bar higher than Vietti has over the last decade or so. Virtually every wine that emerges from these cellars is outstanding, and many are profound. Winemaker Luca Currado, his brother-in-law Mario Cordero and their staff have taken the early groundbreaking work of Alfredo and Lucia Currado and built upon those successes, reaching an unprecedented level of consistency and quality across their entire range. There are few greater estate's in Piemonte than Vietti. From their pioneering work with Arneis through to their brilliant Barbera's and Dolcetto's then winding up with their magisterial cru Baroli, this is undoubtedly one of the regions great producers. While the original work was carried out by Alfredo Currado (who passed-away a few years ago) his son, Luca, has made an even greater impact and guaranteed that, at least for the forseeable future, Vietti will continue grow its reputation.
In total they hold over 11 hectares of vines and are one of only a few who own cru Barolo vineyards in each of the main communes. One of their greatest strengths has been - and continues to be - their ability to comes to terms with the evolving style at play within the region. Instead of falling for the all modern or all traditional, they have taken what they need from both and applied it in varying degrees to their production of their own wines. The result is wine that speaks of its individual terroir whilst keeping the variety on a pedestal. Late in 2016, Luca announced the sale of the estate to Aerican investors. Thankfully nothing will change and he will remain the spiritual and pratical force for the future. In fact, the investment gives him even greater scope to expand his operations in the best vineyards and concentrate only on turning out better and better wines. Certainly something to look forward to for sure. PWS
